Bexley Public Library is one of seven independent public library districts in Franklin County, Ohio. The library’s primary source of funding comes from the Library and Local Government Support Fund, a portion of Ohio’s State Income Tax set aside for local public libraries.

The Board of Trustees of Bexley Public Library consists of seven members appointed to seven-year terms. Section 3375.33 of the Ohio Revised Code provides that public library boards of trustees are "bodies politic and corporate". The Board, which as a body holds title to all real and personal property of the library, is vested with all powers necessary to organize and operate the library, including: (1) the authority to appropriate and expend library funds, (2) the authority to establish library buildings and facilities and to regulate their use, (3) the authority to select library materials and to establish regulations relating to their loan and other use, (4) the authority to appoint and set the compensation and terms and conditions of employment of all library staff, and (5) the authority to accept and utilize, as deemed appropriate, gifts to the library, of whatever nature.

The Board of Trustees discharges their responsibilities by (1) appointing a chief executive officer to whom authority is delegated to administer the library in their behalf, (2) appointing a financial officer responsible for the maintenance of financial records, and (3) meeting regularly to review the operation and finances of the library.

Through a process of continuous review and study of the library operation, the Board of Trustees endeavor to provide the best possible library services consistent with current standards of professional library management.

The library Board is a policymaking and oversight body not directly involved in the daily operation of the library. Comments, suggestions, or complaints about the operation of the library or the provision of any of its services should be made to the library Director, who is responsible for operating the library according to the board’s policies. The Director may be contacted by telephone at 614-231-9709, or in writing at 2411 E. Main Street, Bexley, Ohio 43209.

Board Member Openings

From time to time, Bexley Public Library has openings on the Board of Trustees.  The Library maintains a list of interested applicants.

Qualified nominees should have an interest in the work of the public library, a commitment to its goals, the ability to work as a team member, proven non-profit organizational experience, be active in community affairs,  and should have the ability to withstand pressures, prejudices, and provincialism.

A trustee serves a term of seven years, and the time commitment is significant.

Regular Meetings:    Monthly

Special Meetings: As needed-- these are not frequent

Committee Meetings: As needed—some committees may meet on a monthly basis in addition to the regular meeting.

Attendance at library events and trustee training programs throughout the year is encouraged.

To receive an application form, the Board requests that members of the community who themselves are interested or who would like to nominate a community member send an e-mail to  bexleydirector@bexleylibrary.org.
