Shirley Brooks-Jones was on a flight back to the United States on September 11, 2001, when her plane was diverted to Gander International Airport in Newfoundland, Canada. The tiny town of Lewisporte took in nearly 800 of the stranded passengers for three days refusing to accept any payment. On the flight back to the U.S., Brooks-Jones came up with the idea of creating a college scholarship fund for the children of Lewisporte. Brooks-Jones has traveled back to Lewisporte several times to award scholarships to Lewisporte high school students. Currently the the Lewisporte Area Flight 15 Scholarship Fund, which is set up through the Columbus Foundation, has grown to nearly $1 million.
